Does Calvo Meet Rotemberg at the Zero Lower Bound?∗

چکیده
This paper compares the Calvo model with the Rotemberg model in a fully nonlinear dynamic new Keynesian framework with an occasionally binding zero lower bound (ZLB) on nominal interest rates. Although the two models are equivalent to a first-order approximation, they generate very different results regarding the policy functions and the government spending multiplier based on nonlinear solutions. The multiplier in the Calvo model is less than one for low persistence of the government spending shock and rises above one as the persistence increases, but eventually decreases with the persistence and falls below one for sufficiently high persistence. In addition, the multiplier increases with the duration of the ZLB. By contrast, the multiplier in the Rotemberg model is less than one and decreases with the persistence. Surprisingly, it also decreases with the duration of the ZLB. JEL classification: C61, E31, E52, E62.

Liquidity Deflation and Safe Assets Shortage
The current debate about slow recovery from the Great Deflation, accompanied by persistent threat of price deflation, has highlighted the relevance of liquidity as a necessary factor to ensure stability and growth. An important branch of the literature focuses on the Safe Assets (i.e., liquid assets which market values are highly resilient in terms of goods and services), and pays special atten...

We extend the Rotemberg-Saloner’s (1986) [Rotemberg, J., Saloner, G., 1986. A supergame-theoretic model of price wars during booms. American Economic Review 76:390–407] ‘‘implicit collusion’’ framework to the consideration of capital market imperfections, captured by a non-zero probability of liquidation of firms in recessionary periods. We show that the Rotemberg-Saloner result of countercycli...
متن کاملSeigniorage-maximizing inflation
What is the seigniorage-maximizing level of inflation? Four models formulae for the seigniorage maximizing inflation rate (SMIR) are compared. Two sticky-price models arrive at very different quantitative recommendations although both predict somewhat lower SMIRs than Cagan’s formula and a variant of a .ex-price model due to Kimbrough (2006). The models differ markedly in how inflation distorts...

In this paper the problem of serial batch scheduling in a two-stage hybrid flow shop environment with minimizing Makesapn is investigated. In serial batching it is assumed that jobs in a batch are processed serially, and their completion time is defined to be equal to the finishing time of the last job in the batch. The analysis and implementation of the prohibited transference of jobs among th...
